The Season of the Snowdrop

All across the country there’s signs of Spring just around the corner with the arrival of one of natures finest displays - Snowdrops.

I’ve visited many great gardens and landscapes photographing these tiny white flowers which as just a single perfect specimen or in their thousands give the most uplifting and wonderful experience in the final throws of winter.

Here’s some of the best places to visit in the South West of the United Kingdom:

Welford Park

The beauty of Welford Park shines out at this time of year, a gorgeous setting made even more stunning by the thousands upon thousands of pure white snowdrops that have awoken from their slumber and carpet the woods and gardens. It’s an incredible sight and a photographers dream spotting the differing varieties mingling in the leaf litter and amongst the crocus and aconites.
(The cakes are also something special too and worth the admission alone)!

Painswick Rococo Garden

One of the most beautiful and enchanting places to visit in January has to be the Rococo Garden in Painswick, Glos.
The star of the show is undoubtedly the white blanket of snowdrops that weave their way through the gardens and woodland beyond, though hidden amongst the grounds are picturesque pavilions and features - photographing a garden like this is pure joy, especially so during the mid-winter months….

Colesbourne Gardens

A carpet of snowdrops is a welcome sight during the winter months and this blanket of white at Colesbourne Gardens in the Cotswolds is quite something to behold.
Over 10 acres of woods and gardens adorn this beautiful spot in the Cotswolds containing 350 types of snowdrops creating vast swathes of cheerful blooms, each flower head nodding gently in the breeze.
Sprinkled throughout are an accompaniment of early flowering spring colour, such as hellebores, cyclamen, eranthis beneath an under storey of cornus and viburnum who’s heady scent fills the woodland.
